Latta Place Historic Site
Latta Place Historic Site is named for Captain John Latta (1753-1835), who settled in what is today Columbia in about 1771. He built his home on top of a hill overlooking the city and bought one acre of land from James Scrivener (1682-1758) at that time. Latta’s son, Major Moses Saterlee Latta (1789-1859), inherited the plantation upon his father’s death in 1835. He expanded it with more than 30 acres of land in his lifetime.
