The Smithville North Carolina metro area is part of the Myrtle Beach metropolitan area. The town of Smithville is one of six townships in Brunswick County. Its population is 12,019, and the population density is 152 inhabitants per square mile. The town is also part of the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina metropolitan area.

There are several major cities within a couple of hours of Smithville. These larger cities are great for booking flights between different airports in the area. The first Union troops to enter Smithville were led by Union Naval Lieutenant William B. Cushing. Cushing had captured 44 Confederate prisoners from Fort Pender. He then demanded the surrender of all private arms and raised the Flag of the United States. From there, the Union troops staged at Fort Pender and advanced to Wilmington. Confederate troops eventually surrendered and the town reverted to Fort Johnston.

The town has been home to a population of fewer than 2,500 since 1870. The town is home to many historical sites, which include many old homes and buildings. In fact, Smithville North Carolina is one of the oldest towns in the state. Many historic sites have been restored, including many local churches.

For entertainment, Smithville offers a historic movie theater. The Howell Theatre was opened in 1935. King Kong's first production was screened here, as were silent films by Charlie Chaplin. The town is home to one of North Carolina's largest flea markets, the Brightleaf Flea Market. It has over 100,000 square feet of space and offers an eclectic assortment of goods.
